World Multiple Sclerosis Day
Today (last Wednesday of May) is World Multiple Sclerosis Day. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects 2.3 million people worldwide. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 25 and 31. There are twice as many women suffering from MS than men.
There is currently no cure for MS and researchers are trying to understand more about the disease. MS is one of the most difficult disease to research because: • It is a complex disease, believed to be caused by a combination of genetic, immunological and environmental factors. • The effects are within 2 of the most inaccessible parts of the body, the brain and spinal cord. • There is no single pattern to the disease and the course of the disease is unpredictable. There are no definitive tests for the disease.
Despite these challenges, researchers are working hard to determine the cause, and treatments of the disease. Learn more about MS research here
