Part 2 - The Scientific Method

In research, researchers and scientists used the Scientific Method to solve their problems or explain an observation.

Health researchers used controlled experiments as a form of Scientific Method to test their hypothesis. “A controlled experiment is a scientific test done under controlled conditions, meaning that just one (or a few) factors are changed at a time, while all others are kept constant.” (2)

A famous example of a physician employing the Scientific Method is John Snow. In the 1854 major cholera outbreak in London Soho, Snow observed that cholera outbreak happened around areas receiving impure and dirty water. He hypothesized that contaminated water, not air was the source of transmission of cholera. He identified the source of outbreak as the public water pump on Broad Street at Cambridge Street and persuaded the authorities to disable the well pump by removing its handle. This led to a rapid decline in the epidemic and ending the outbreak. Snow's endeavor to find the cause of the transmission of cholera caused him to unknowingly create a double-blind experiment. (3)
